"Chindo possesses three "intangible national treasures": a form of women's ritual songs and the two women who lead the choruses on this CD, probably the only one devoted to Chindo tradition. They perform ritual, rice-planting and funeral songs with groups they have trained as part of their duties, in a "sorrowful voice" style whose striking rubato is known as "twisted rhythm."
