I bought this CD in 1994, before the days of bonus tracks on every other CD on release. Even without the extra tracks though it's still a favourite.
I was a fan of the TV series first and then the film, but it has to be said that the two are inextricably linked by the haunting theme tune (and I think it's just as good with the words).
This must have been one of the first CD's to include dialogue as well as music (and be warned, there is considerably ore of the former than the latter) before the idea was popularised (and flogged to death) by Tarantino, but given how good the dialogue is that's no bad thing.
In summary, buy it if you like the film (a lot), don't buy it if your mind is closed to the concept of tunes with lyrics, or more importantly if you hated the film.

Well, it could've been better than this, but the CD version of Johnny Mandel's "M*A*S*H" score is still better than the original LP release (which didn't even include the full, un-edited version of "Suicide is Painless"!). It's an average CD, but nearly all the songs contain audio clips from the film with the music merely as background audio - which I disapprove of. At least they've decided to keep in some un-edited songs like "Suicide is Painless" and the Ahmad Jamal version of that song. Good for M*A*S*H fans; for anyone else, I wouldn't recommend it.

For all the reviewers who say they were expecting the TV theme. Duh, it says 1970 soundtrack. The song you want to hear, all cleaned up is still called "suicide is painless now". 1970's and 80's CBS TV execs were not going to use the the depressing but meaningful lyrics on national TV. So you got some shlock recording studio instrumental version. And now after all these years, every Midwest yahoo thinks it's the original. And Alan Alda was the original Hawkeye too. Read before you buy! And learn to investigate things a little i.e. 1-Robert Altman's MASH. 2- CBS's MASH
