The five members of the group, Sixwire, are clearly not novices in country music circles. This is an ensemble of respected musicians, composers, singers and producers. Individually and collectively, Sixwire wrote, produced and performed each and every song on their groundbreaking self-titled debut CD released in 2002. Featuring tight three-part harmonies (like Diamond Rio and BlackHawk) they are deep-rooted in a guitar sound.
Sixwire comprises a frontline of: Andy Childs (lead vocals), Steve Mandile (guitar) and Robb Houston (guitar, background vocals), anchored by John Howard (bass) and Chuck Tilley (drums). The band members have enjoyed each other's company as friends and colleagues for years. As professional musicians, they frequently worked together on the road and in the studio with artists like Faith Hill, Randy Travis and Phil Vassar before getting together as a band. Knowing from their vast experience that musical success begins with great songs, they spent the first six months collaborating on material and recording demos before they began performing live.
The band created a buzz around Nashville, and upon signing with Warner Bros. Records, named themselves Sixwire as a nod to the six-string guitar. “This band is all about guitars and vocals,” says Mandile, who produced Sixwire's fresh sounding debut and wrote or co-wrote all 11 cuts. “Our sound is aggressive and high energy with a lot of harmonies. All of the harmonies are structured like three lead vocals. It's not just background singers—you can hear each vocalist singing his part.” With every song on Sixwire, the band proves they aren't afraid to seize life boldly and on their own terms. On each track, the singers wrap their soulful harmonies around masterfully crafted songs that celebrate independence, cherish love, and mourn heartbreak.
“The seeds in this band were sown before we strapped it on as Sixwire,” Howard says. “This CD is a culmination of our life work. We love music. All we've ever done is work as musicians. None of us have ever questioned that we'd make our living in music. And since we have chosen this path, we're going to follow some advice passed down to us by a highly successful recording artist—Be nice, have fun but kick ass.”
