This mid 1970s recording brought the music of Barrios to the notice of the classical guitar world. It is still the benchmark by which other Barrios recordings are measured, such is the quality of John Williams' playing, coupled with a close but well focused recording. This standard is also maintained in the Ponce "Folia" Variations, which are performed with great clarity & a feeling for unity, culminating in a fugue of impressive scale.
Tracks 7 & 13 show Barrios' poetic skill in tremolo composition, beautifully controlled by John Williams. The opening La Catedral also impresses with its contrasting sections & virtuosic ending. Williams more recently recorded another Barrios disc ('The Great Paraguayan'), but the recorded sound seems less natural. At over 75 minutes, this cd is a generous showcase for both performer & composers.
